Mississippi doesn't always make the top of dog-friendly travel lists, but it absolutely should. The state moves at a slower, more welcoming pace than much of the country, and that hospitality extends to four-legged visitors. Oxford is one of the most charming small cities in the entire South, the Gulf Coast offers beautiful beaches and a laid-back coastal vibe, and the Delta's wide-open landscapes are unlike anything else in the region.

Gulf Islands National Seashore — Ocean Springs
A stunning stretch of protected Gulf Coast with pristine white sand beaches, maritime forests, and crystal-clear water. Leashed dogs are welcome on the mainland beaches and trails — one of the most beautiful natural areas in the entire Southeast.
Tuxachanie National Recreation Trail — DeSoto National Forest
A 23-mile trail through the longleaf pine forests of the DeSoto National Forest near Biloxi. Dogs are welcome on leash and will love the shaded, peaceful terrain through one of Mississippi's most beautiful natural landscapes.
Lefleur's Bluff State Park — Jackson
A beautiful urban state park along the Pearl River in Jackson with dog-friendly trails, a lake, and a golf course. A great green escape in the heart of the capital city.
Natchez Trace Parkway — Statewide
The historic 444-mile parkway running from Natchez to Nashville is one of America's most scenic drives, and leashed dogs are welcome at overlooks, picnic areas, and many trails along the route. The Mississippi section is particularly beautiful.
Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge — Brooksville
A stunning wildlife refuge in east-central Mississippi with dog-friendly trails through bottomland hardwood forests, past lakes teeming with alligators and waterfowl. A truly wild and memorable Mississippi experience.
Ship Island — Gulf Coast
A barrier island accessible by ferry from Gulfport with beautiful white sand beaches and a historic Civil War fort. Leashed dogs are welcome on the island — check ferry policies before you go for one of the Gulf Coast's most unique day trips.
🗺️ Suggested Road Trip Route
Start in Oxford (the Square + Yalobusha Brewing) → south through the Delta (Clarksdale for blues history) → to Jackson (Lefleur's Bluff + Parlor Market) → southwest to Natchez (Dunleith + Natchez Trace) → east to Hattiesburg → finish on the Gulf Coast (Ocean Springs + Biloxi + Gulf Islands).
This route is best enjoyed over 5–6 days and gives you a beautiful cross-section of Mississippi's diverse landscapes and culture.
🐶 Pro Tips for Mississippi Road Trips
- Mississippi summers are extremely hot and humid — fall, winter, and spring are far better for dogs.
- Ocean Springs is one of Mississippi's most underrated towns — give it a full day, your dog will love it.
- The Natchez Trace Parkway has no commercial vehicles and very little traffic — it's one of the most peaceful drives in America.
- Gulf Coast beaches can have jellyfish and strong currents — keep an eye on your pup near the water.
- Oxford's Square is extremely walkable and dog-friendly — park once and explore on foot.
