Part 8 of our 25-part Southeast road trip series takes us to the Pelican State — and Louisiana is one of the most unique and dog-friendly road trip destinations in the entire country. From the vibrant streets of New Orleans to the moss-draped bayous of the Atchafalaya Basin and the live oak-lined avenues of Baton Rouge, Louisiana is unlike anywhere else on earth.
🐾 Why Louisiana?
Louisiana's culture is its own — a singular blend of French, Spanish, African, and Native American influences that produced the world's greatest food city, a music tradition without parallel, and a landscape of haunting beauty. Dogs are welcome throughout, and the outdoor patio culture that defines Louisiana dining means your pup can join you for beignets, po'boys, and cold Abita beers across the state.
🏨 Pet-Friendly Hotels & Stays
Louisiana has several excellent pet-friendly options including the Kimpton Hotel Fontenot in the CBD and numerous boutique properties in the Garden District and Uptown neighborhoods. Baton Rouge has pet-friendly chain hotels near LSU and the river. The Cajun Country around Lafayette has charming bed-and-breakfasts that welcome dogs.
🍽️ Pet-Friendly Restaurants & Cafés
New Orleans' outdoor dining culture is legendary — courtyard restaurants and sidewalk cafés throughout the French Quarter, Garden District, and Magazine Street welcome leashed dogs. Cafe Du Monde's outdoor seating area is dog-friendly. The Frenchmen Street music corridor has several outdoor venues where dogs are welcome.
🍺 Dog-Friendly Breweries
Abita Brewing in Abita Springs (just north of New Orleans) has a dog-friendly taproom and beautiful grounds. Urban South Brewery in New Orleans has a large dog-friendly outdoor space. Tin Roof Brewing in Baton Rouge welcomes dogs in their taproom and outdoor area.
🌲 Dog-Friendly Parks & Trails
Audubon Park in New Orleans is a stunning 350-acre park with a dog-friendly lagoon path and off-leash dog run. City Park in New Orleans has miles of dog-friendly paths through ancient live oaks. The Atchafalaya National Heritage Area has dog-friendly trails and boat launches for exploring the bayou. Kisatchie National Forest in central Louisiana has extensive dog-friendly hiking.
🗺️ Suggested Road Trip Route
Start in New Orleans (French Quarter + Audubon Park + Abita Brewing) → west to Lafayette & Cajun Country → north to Baton Rouge → finish at Kisatchie National Forest. Best enjoyed over 4–5 days.
🐶 Pro Tips
- New Orleans summers are brutally hot and humid — visit October through April for the best experience.
- Many New Orleans restaurants are indoors-only — always confirm outdoor/patio availability before visiting with your dog.
- Louisiana has alligators in many waterways — keep your dog on leash near any body of water.
- Mardi Gras (February/March) brings enormous crowds — not ideal for dogs.
🛍️ Pack Like a Bougie Pup for Louisiana
New Orleans is made for exploring — and your pup deserves to do it in style. Make sure you've got the right gear before you hit the bayou:
- Bougie Harnesses Collection — Premium, adjustable harnesses perfect for French Quarter strolls and trail walks alike.
- Orthopedic Dog Car Seat Carrier (Black Vegan Leather) — Keep small dogs safe and cozy on long drives between destinations.
