Part 13 of our 25-part Southeast road trip series takes us to the Free State — and Maryland is one of the most surprisingly dog-friendly and scenically diverse states in the entire region. From the wild beaches of Assateague Island to the Chesapeake Bay's charming waterfront towns, the Appalachian trails of Western Maryland, and the vibrant neighborhoods of Baltimore, Maryland rewards the curious road tripper at every turn.
🐾 Why Maryland?
Maryland is a small state with an outsized personality. The Chesapeake Bay defines much of its character — blue crabs, skipjacks, watermen, and waterfront towns that feel like they've barely changed in a century. The Eastern Shore has a quiet, unhurried beauty that's perfect for road trips with dogs. Western Maryland's mountains and trails rival anything in neighboring West Virginia. And Baltimore, for all its grit, has a genuine dog-loving culture and some of the best seafood in America.
🏨 Pet-Friendly Hotels & Stays
Baltimore has several pet-friendly options including the Kimpton Hotel Monaco in the Inner Harbor area. Annapolis has charming waterfront inns that welcome dogs. Ocean City has numerous pet-friendly hotels and vacation rentals (with seasonal restrictions). The Eastern Shore's St. Michaels and Oxford have boutique properties that welcome dogs.
🍽️ Pet-Friendly Restaurants & Cafés
Baltimore's Fells Point and Canton neighborhoods have extensive dog-friendly patio dining. Annapolis's waterfront has several spots that welcome leashed dogs. St. Michaels on the Eastern Shore has charming outdoor dining with Chesapeake Bay views.
🍺 Dog-Friendly Breweries
Baltimore has a thriving craft beer scene — Heavy Seas Beer, Union Craft Brewing, and Checkerspot Brewing all have dog-friendly outdoor spaces. Flying Dog Brewery in Frederick has a large dog-friendly taproom and outdoor area.
🌲 Dog-Friendly Parks & Trails
Assateague Island National Seashore welcomes leashed dogs on the beach year-round — one of the great dog beach experiences on the East Coast. Catoctin Mountain Park near Thurmont has dog-friendly trails through beautiful hardwood forest. Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park has 184 miles of dog-friendly towpath trail along the Potomac River. Patapsco Valley State Park near Baltimore has extensive dog-friendly trails.
🗺️ Suggested Road Trip Route
Start in Baltimore (Fells Point + craft breweries) → south to Annapolis → east across the Bay Bridge to the Eastern Shore (St. Michaels + Oxford) → south to Assateague Island → west through Frederick → finish in Western Maryland. Best enjoyed over 4–5 days.
🐶 Pro Tips
- Assateague Island has wild ponies — keep your dog on leash and maintain a safe distance at all times.
- The Bay Bridge can have significant traffic on summer weekends — plan crossings for off-peak times.
- Maryland blue crab season runs May through November — the perfect time to visit waterfront towns.
- Ocean City has strict seasonal pet restrictions on the beach — Assateague is the better dog beach option.
🛍️ Travel in Bougie Style Through Maryland
From Assateague's wild beaches to the Chesapeake waterfront and the Appalachian trails of Western Maryland, your pup deserves gear that keeps up. Here's what we recommend for the Free State:
- Airline Approved Mystique Fashion Pet Carrier — Chic enough for the Chesapeake waterfront, practical enough for the journey. Airline approved and designed for pets who travel in style.
- Bougie Harnesses Collection — 184 miles of C&O Canal towpath trail await — make sure your pup is strapped in with a premium, adjustable harness.
- Orthopedic Dog Car Seat Carrier (Black Vegan Leather) — Long drives across the Bay Bridge and down the Eastern Shore are so much better when your small pup rides in orthopedic comfort.
