West Virginia is almost entirely mountains, rivers, and forest — and that's exactly what makes it so extraordinary for road trips with dogs. New River Gorge became America's newest national park in 2020, and it's a world-class destination for hiking, whitewater rafting, and rock climbing. Seneca Rocks is one of the most dramatic geological formations in the East. And Harpers Ferry, at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, is one of the most historically significant and scenically beautiful small towns in America.

Fayetteville near New River Gorge has several pet-friendly inns and vacation rentals. Lewisburg — one of West Virginia's most charming small cities — has boutique accommodations that welcome dogs. Harpers Ferry has pet-friendly options steps from the historic district and river trails.
🍽️ Pet-Friendly Restaurants & Cafés
Fayetteville has a surprisingly vibrant food scene for a small town, with several dog-friendly patio options. Lewisburg's downtown has charming cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating. Harpers Ferry has casual spots near the river that welcome leashed dogs.
🍺 Dog-Friendly Breweries
Fayetteville Brewing Company has a dog-friendly taproom steps from New River Gorge. Greenbrier Valley Brewing in Lewisburg is a beloved local brewery with outdoor space. Bridge Brew Works near Fayetteville welcomes dogs in their taproom.
🌲 Dog-Friendly Parks & Trails
New River Gorge National Park welcomes leashed dogs on most trails and at overlooks — the Long Point Trail and Grandview Rim Trail are spectacular. Seneca Rocks has dog-friendly trails to the base of the iconic quartzite fins. Blackwater Falls State Park has dog-friendly trails to the stunning amber-colored waterfall. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park welcomes leashed dogs on most trails.
🗺️ Suggested Road Trip Route
Start in Harpers Ferry → west to Seneca Rocks → south to Blackwater Falls → southwest to Lewisburg → finish at New River Gorge. Best enjoyed over 4–5 days.
🐶 Pro Tips
- New River Gorge's Bridge Walk is not dog-friendly — plan accordingly.
- West Virginia's mountain roads can be narrow and winding — drive carefully and allow extra travel time.
- Fall foliage in West Virginia is extraordinary — mid-October is peak season.
- Cell service is limited in many parts of West Virginia — download offline maps before you go.
