D.C. often gets overlooked as a dog destination because people think of it as a city of suits and bureaucracy. Right Proper Brewing Company — Shaw & Brookland
One of D.C.'s most beloved craft breweries with dog-friendly outdoor spaces at both locations. Their Raised by Wolves IPA is a local favorite, and the Shaw brewpub is one of the best brewery experiences in the city.
Hellbender Brewing Company — Brookland
A Brookland craft brewery with a large dog-friendly outdoor space. Creative small-batch releases and a welcoming atmosphere in one of D.C.'s most charming neighborhoods.
Anxo Cidery & Pintxos Bar — Truxton Circle & Capitol Hill
D.C.'s premier craft cidery with dog-friendly outdoor spaces at both locations. Their dry Basque-style ciders are extraordinary, and the pintxos (Basque tapas) are some of the best bar food in the city.

Rock Creek Park — Northwest D.C.
A 1,700-acre national park running through the heart of D.C. with miles of dog-friendly trails along Rock Creek. One of the great urban parks in America — it's hard to believe you're in the nation's capital when you're deep in the forest here. Dogs must be leashed on trails but can be off-leash in designated areas.
The National Mall — Downtown D.C.
The iconic two-mile stretch from the Lincoln Memorial to the Capitol is open, free, and dog-friendly. Walk past the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial, and the Reflecting Pool with your pup — one of the great dog walks in America.
Theodore Roosevelt Island — Potomac River
A beautiful 88-acre island in the Potomac River accessible by footbridge from the Virginia side, with dog-friendly trails through forest and marsh. A peaceful, car-free escape in the heart of the metro area.
Glover-Archbold Park — Northwest D.C.
A beautiful linear park running through Northwest D.C. with dog-friendly trails along Foundry Branch Creek. One of the city's best-kept secrets for dog walking, with a surprisingly wild and forested character for an urban park.
Lincoln Park — Capitol Hill
A beautiful neighborhood park on Capitol Hill with a popular off-leash dog area. One of the best dog parks in D.C., with a great community atmosphere and easy access to Eastern Market and the Hill's excellent restaurant scene.
C&O Canal National Historical Park — Georgetown to Cumberland
The towpath along the historic Chesapeake & Ohio Canal runs 184 miles from Georgetown to Cumberland, Maryland, and is one of the most dog-friendly trails on the entire East Coast. Even a short walk along the Georgetown section is beautiful and historically fascinating.
🗺️ Suggested D.C. Itinerary
Morning: Rock Creek Park (trail walk) → brunch at Compass Rose → afternoon stroll on the National Mall (Lincoln Memorial to Capitol) → happy hour at Right Proper Brewing (Shaw) → dinner at The Dabney.
Day 2: Georgetown (C&O Canal towpath walk) → lunch at Surfside → Theodore Roosevelt Island → evening in Adams Morgan (The LINE + Tail Up Goat).
D.C. rewards slow exploration — pick two or three neighborhoods per day and walk everywhere with your pup.
🐶 Pro Tips for D.C. with Your Dog
- Most Smithsonian museums do not allow dogs inside — plan outdoor activities and dog-friendly restaurants around museum visits.
- D.C. summers are brutally hot and humid — spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) are the best times to visit with a dog.
- The National Mall gets extremely crowded on weekends and during cherry blossom season (late March-early April) — go early morning for the best experience with your pup.
- D.C. has an excellent Metro system, but dogs must be in carriers — plan to walk or use rideshare with your pup.
- Many D.C. neighborhoods have dedicated dog parks — check the D.C. Dog Parks website for the one closest to where you're staying.
