Start in New Orleans (French Quarter + Audubon Park + NOLA Brewing) → west to Lafayette & Cajun Country (Prejean's + Bayou Teche Brewing) → north through Baton Rouge (Tin Roof Brewing) → northwest to Natchitoches (meat pies + Cane River) → finish in Shreveport (Great Raft Brewing) → OR loop back south through Kisatchie National Forest.
This route is best enjoyed over 5–7 days and gives you a beautiful cross-section of Louisiana's extraordinary cultural and natural diversity.
🐶 Pro Tips for Louisiana Road Trips
- Louisiana summers are brutally hot and humid — fall through spring is far better for dogs. October through April is ideal.
- New Orleans' French Quarter sidewalks get extremely hot in summer — protect your pup's paws and keep water handy at all times.
- Always keep dogs on leash near any water in Louisiana — alligators are present in virtually every body of water in the state.
- The Catahoula Leopard Dog is Louisiana's state dog — you'll see them everywhere and locals will love meeting yours.
- Natchitoches (pronounced "NACK-uh-tish") is one of Louisiana's most underrated destinations — give it a full day.
