Part 15 of our 25-part Southeast road trip series takes us to the nation's capital — and Washington D.C. is one of the most surprisingly dog-friendly cities in the entire country. From the iconic monuments of the National Mall to the vibrant neighborhoods of Capitol Hill, Georgetown, and Adams Morgan, D.C. welcomes dogs with open arms.
🐾 Why Washington D.C.?
Washington D.C. is a city of extraordinary contrasts — monumental grandeur and intimate neighborhood charm, political power and everyday community life. For dog owners, it's a revelation: the National Mall's vast green spaces, Rock Creek Park's miles of trails, and the city's deeply ingrained outdoor culture make it one of the best urban dog destinations in America. And the food scene — driven by a cosmopolitan population and serious culinary talent — is world-class, with dog-friendly patios throughout the city's most vibrant neighborhoods.
🏨 Pet-Friendly Hotels & Stays
D.C. has excellent pet-friendly options including the Kimpton George Hotel on Capitol Hill and the Kimpton Carlyle Hotel in Dupont Circle — both with zero pet fees. The Watergate Hotel in Foggy Bottom welcomes pets. Several boutique properties in Georgetown and Adams Morgan also welcome dogs.
🍽️ Pet-Friendly Restaurants & Cafés
D.C.'s outdoor dining scene is extensive. The Wharf development on the Southwest waterfront has several dog-friendly spots with stunning water views. Georgetown's M Street and Wisconsin Avenue corridors have numerous patio options. The 14th Street NW corridor in Logan Circle is one of the city's most dog-friendly dining neighborhoods.
🍺 Dog-Friendly Breweries & Bars
D.C. Brau Brewing has a dog-friendly taproom. Right Proper Brewing in Shaw has outdoor space that welcomes dogs. The rooftop bars of several D.C. hotels welcome leashed dogs — check individual policies.
🌲 Dog-Friendly Parks & Trails
Rock Creek Park has over 32 miles of dog-friendly trails through a stunning urban forest — one of the great urban nature escapes in America. The National Mall welcomes leashed dogs on its vast green spaces and around the reflecting pools. Theodore Roosevelt Island has beautiful dog-friendly trails accessible via a footbridge from the Virginia side. Meridian Hill Park in Columbia Heights has a beautiful terraced design and is very dog-friendly.
