Part 17 of our 25-part Southeast road trip series takes us to the Garden State — and New Jersey is one of the most surprisingly dog-friendly and scenically diverse states in the entire Northeast. From the wild beaches of Cape May and Sandy Hook to the dramatic Delaware Water Gap and the charming Victorian towns of the Shore, New Jersey rewards the curious road tripper with dogs at every turn.
🐾 Why New Jersey?
New Jersey gets a bad rap that it absolutely doesn't deserve. The Jersey Shore has some of the most beautiful beaches on the entire East Coast — and several of them are genuinely dog-friendly. Cape May is one of the most charming and historically preserved Victorian towns in America. The Delaware Water Gap is a world-class outdoor recreation destination. And the Pine Barrens — a vast, mysterious, and largely undeveloped forest in the heart of the state — is one of the great hidden natural treasures of the Northeast.
🏨 Pet-Friendly Hotels & Stays
Cape May has numerous pet-friendly Victorian bed-and-breakfasts and inns. Sandy Hook has pet-friendly options in the nearby Highlands area. The Delaware Water Gap area has pet-friendly inns and vacation rentals. Princeton has several pet-friendly hotels near the university.
🍽️ Pet-Friendly Restaurants & Cafés
Cape May's Washington Street Mall area has several dog-friendly outdoor dining options. Asbury Park's vibrant boardwalk scene has numerous spots that welcome leashed dogs. Lambertville on the Delaware River has charming outdoor dining with a very dog-friendly culture.
🍺 Dog-Friendly Breweries
Cape May Brewing Company has a large dog-friendly outdoor space and is one of the best craft breweries in the state. Carton Brewing in Atlantic Highlands has a dog-friendly taproom with stunning views of New York Harbor. Kane Brewing in Ocean has a dog-friendly outdoor area.
🌲 Dog-Friendly Parks & Trails
Sandy Hook (Gateway National Recreation Area) welcomes leashed dogs on most beaches year-round — one of the best dog beach experiences in the entire Northeast. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area has miles of dog-friendly trails along the Delaware River. Cape May Point State Park has dog-friendly trails through coastal meadows and along the beach. Wharton State Forest in the Pine Barrens has extensive dog-friendly trails through the mysterious pine and oak forest.
🗺️ Suggested Road Trip Route
Start at Sandy Hook → south along the Shore (Asbury Park + Cape May Brewing) → finish at Cape May Point. Or head northwest to the Delaware Water Gap and Lambertville for a completely different New Jersey experience. Best enjoyed over 3–4 days.
🐶 Pro Tips

- The Jersey Shore in July and August is extremely crowded — the shoulder seasons are dramatically more pleasant.
- Cape May is one of the top birding destinations in North America — keep dogs leashed during migration season.
