A dog on a road trip through Kentucky exploring dog-friendly trails breweries and horse country in the Bluegrass State

Part 10 of our 25-part Southeast road trip series takes us to the Bluegrass State — and Kentucky is one of the most surprisingly dog-friendly and scenically beautiful states in the entire Southeast. From the rolling horse farms of the Bluegrass to the dramatic gorges of the Red River and the underground wonders of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky is a road tripper's dream.

🐾 Why Kentucky?

Kentucky has a quiet, unhurried charm that's deeply appealing for road trips with dogs. The Bluegrass region around Lexington is extraordinarily beautiful — white fences, rolling green hills, and thoroughbred horses grazing in the morning mist. The Red River Gorge is one of the great rock climbing and hiking destinations in the East. And Louisville has become one of the South's most vibrant food and bourbon cities, with a dog-friendly culture to match.

🏨 Pet-Friendly Hotels & Stays

Louisville has several excellent pet-friendly options including the 21c Museum Hotel and Kimpton properties. Lexington has pet-friendly boutique hotels near the horse farms and Keeneland. The Red River Gorge area has numerous pet-friendly cabins and lodges ideal for hiking-focused trips.

🍽️ Pet-Friendly Restaurants & Cafés

Louisville's NuLu (East Market District) neighborhood has a thriving patio dining scene that welcomes dogs. Lexington's Chevy Chase neighborhood has several dog-friendly spots. Bardstown — the Bourbon Capital of the World — has casual outdoor dining options near the distilleries.

🍺 Dog-Friendly Breweries & Distilleries

Louisville has a fantastic craft beer scene — Gravely Brewing and Goodwood Brewing both have dog-friendly outdoor spaces. The Kentucky Bourbon Trail has several distilleries with dog-friendly grounds, including Buffalo Trace in Frankfort and Maker's Mark in Loretto.

🌲 Dog-Friendly Parks & Trails

Red River Gorge Geological Area has hundreds of miles of dog-friendly trails through stunning sandstone arches and cliffs. Mammoth Cave National Park welcomes leashed dogs on surface trails (not in the cave). Cumberland Falls State Resort Park has dog-friendly trails to the "Niagara of the South." Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area has extensive dog-friendly backcountry trails.

🗺️ Suggested Road Trip Route

Start in Louisville (NuLu + bourbon distilleries) → east to Lexington & horse country → southeast to Red River Gorge → southwest to Mammoth Cave → finish at Cumberland Falls. Best enjoyed over 5–6 days.

🐶 Pro Tips

  • The Kentucky Derby (first Saturday in May) brings enormous crowds to Louisville — book well in advance or avoid that weekend.
  • Red River Gorge is extremely popular on fall weekends — go on weekdays for a more peaceful experience.
  • Kentucky's horse farms are private property — stick to public roads and designated viewing areas.
  • Mammoth Cave's cave tours do not allow dogs — plan accordingly.
