Start in Amelia Island & Fernandina Beach → south to St. Augustine → west to Gainesville & Paynes Prairie → north to Tallahassee → west along the Panhandle (30A, Destin, Pensacola) → OR head south from St. Augustine to Jacksonville → Tampa Bay (Fort De Soto + Dunedin) → St. Pete Beach → Sarasota.
Florida is big — pick a region and go deep rather than trying to cover the whole state in one trip.
🐶 Pro Tips for Florida Road Trips
- Florida summers are brutally hot and humid — this is a much better road trip destination in fall, winter, or spring for dogs.
- Many Florida beaches restrict dogs during peak season — always check current rules before you go.
- Watch for alligators near any freshwater body — keep dogs on leash and away from water's edge in natural areas.
- North Florida (Amelia Island, St. Augustine, 30A, Panhandle) is far more dog-friendly and manageable than South Florida for a road trip.
- Dunedin is one of Florida's most underrated dog-friendly towns — don't skip it.
- Sarasota is a hidden gem for dog-friendly culture, dining, and waterfront walks — well worth adding to your Gulf Coast itinerary.
