Pisgah National Forest — Western NC

Hanging Rock State Park — Danbury

Umstead State Park — Raleigh

🗺️ Suggested Road Trip Route
Start in Asheville (breweries + Blue Ridge Parkway) → east through the Piedmont (Greensboro, Durham, Raleigh) → south to Davidson → head east to the Outer Banks (Cape Hatteras + Jockey's Ridge) → loop back through Hanging Rock State Park.
This route is best enjoyed over 6–8 days and showcases NC's incredible range from mountains to sea.
🐶 Pro Tips for North Carolina Road Trips
- Asheville is extremely dog-friendly but gets very crowded in fall foliage season (October) — book accommodations well in advance.
- The Outer Banks has seasonal pet restrictions on some beaches — always check current rules before you go.
- The Blue Ridge Parkway can have sections closed in winter — check road status at nps.gov before your trip.
- Asheville's South Slope brewery district is very walkable with your dog — park once and explore on foot.
